Last night the Waterloo team came across a mother currently housed in the Travelodge with her 3 children; a 7 year old girl, and two boys aged 2 and 9. Turns our the children were in desperate need of clothing. The team took swift action, made a call out and ensured today’s team could deliver clothing to the mother this evening. The staff at Travelodge were extremely grateful and said the children had been in pyjamas the whole time. Now they have clothes they can hopefully start going out to enjoy the summer sun. Below is a picture of the bags Rando packed for the team tonight. Seeing those tiny shoes and thinking of those children really breaks my heart. There are sadly so many children living in one room with their parents in this type of temporary accommodation.
When I think about future ideas/direction for Under One Sky I am always being pulled in the direction of the children. 30% of foster children will experience homelessness in some form from rough sleeping to couch surfing. The neglected children of today, are the homeless of tomorrow. By neglect I am not necessarily referring to by the parents but definitely by society. How can we stop trauma early instead of having to repair the damage years later. Seed planted…let’s as the Under One Sky family water it. Ideas are always welcome.
We arrive in this world beaming with light and brilliance. The more we can work together to help children hold onto that the brighter tomorrow will be for everyone. It is so incredibly sad to connect with our homeless friends and hear how entire lives were sabotaged right from the beginning. But somewhere in there the light still shines and for that reason my contribution to UOS playlist is Rihanna – Diamonds:
Keep your contributions coming…we have 20 songs so far.
Remember it takes a village to raise a child so we both have a role and a responsibility.
