Yesterday the Embankment/Soho team was met by an incredible gesture as they finished their shift opposite Trafalgar Square. 60-70 homeless friends where clapping and whistling as the team bowed out for the night. Special moment!

There is a Skywalker who has gone way above and beyond today…Sarah Mimi. She has just finished what turned into a 13 hour shift. Got out the house at 9am to do a breakfast run. On her breakfast route she met Fernando who we got a wheelchair for earlier in the week. His leg is in a really bad state.

Apparently last time he went to hospital, they handed him some wound dressings and asked him to put it on himself. The man can’t walk one step, hasn’t had a shower for weeks…how is he supposed to keep this wound clean?

His GP has told him he should be lying with his legs up for several months. The wheels on the wheelchair were busted so Sarah organised for a wheelchair in Nabil’s house in Surrey to be transported up immediately. As that was happening she finished off the breakfast round.

Turned out this wheelchair was also a model with small wheels i.e. not for pushing with hands. Fernando can’t push with his feet.

Sarah took Fernando to get a shower at ShowerBox at St Giles Church but sadly he couldn’t climb the 3 steps to get into the shower box. She then pushed Fernando + the other wheelchair down to Trafalgar Square where he got a wheelchair with big wheels from one of the Nishkam SWAT guys.

Next, Sarah took him to The Connection to try to arrange for a shower as they have wheelchair access. This might happen on Monday. After all that Sarah did her night shift in the Embankment/Soho team. 

We need to try to get Fernando some help…ideally a place that has some form of care attached. He is beyond vulnerable… he is not able to move.

You have to ask yourself how is it possible this man is still on the street? The government says they have housed 90% of rough sleepers…and there was not room for this man? If anyone has direct links to the Spanish embassy or other ideas then please share.
