A big plea. We now have 8 days to go. Yes, we are planning to continue operating after 5 July but it will be a much scaled down version both in terms of items and frequency. Today we were beyond close to not making Victoria due to lack of sign ups after having been there the last 86 days. Our homeless friends have been let down in a major way. The government made a promise it didn’t keep and we’ve seen the impact of that. UOS has been one of the few organisations those left stranded could rely on. I’d hate to see that change at the last hurdle.
What we as a group have a achieved is extraordinary…there is no two ways about that. This effort will be part of you for the rest of your life. In the last few weeks other parts of our lives have been activated again…we can see friends and work has ramped up but also fatigue is setting in. My biggest wish right now is that we can pull together as a group to deliver each day for the next 8 days. Please have a look at the roster and book yourself in. Together we can do this.
Last night was a special one. It was the last day for the much loved sandwiches. Right from the start on 2 April our main food item was sandwiches. A few days later Amrit came on board so we could offer choice or dinner + breakfast. The group behind the daily production of 240 sandwiches has delivered a truly mammoth task. I don’t have the exact number but in total they will have produced close to 20,000 since we started. No only did they make them, they also raised funds to cover it all. Four people have been instrumental to this: Gloria, Linda, Sonia and Beatrice. A massive family applause and group hug to these wonder women and the rest of their team. Really sad to say goodbye to this essential part of our daily routine. Amrit, Franc and I had the privilege of meeting the entire team of sandwich makers this evening…their energy was one of purpose, community, compassion and simply love.
In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it
