One of our keys strengths as a family is our ability to react quickly to changes in circumstances. Today was seriously hot but we had Michael S and Brian W on cargo bikes delivering 218 2L bottles of water across town. Tomorrow Justin and Paisley are doing the ride while Freddie and Ravi will do Friday. Then temperatures are expected to drop again.
Its fair to say the bike enthusiasts who have signed up to do this emergency water run are pretty excited about it. But our quick response to the weather has also generated the applause of the public. Stefan H is currently busy replying to a tweet our social media team did earlier which has more than 1000 likes and has been shared 172 times so far. The other benefit…we now have a test case for using cargo bikes for the future.
The government has just announced £85m for the councils to pay for emergency accommodation as hotels start claiming their rooms back. This is great news! The worry though, will councils be able to find alternative accommodation at such short notice. Hot off the press…the Waterloo has just come back in and reporting meeting 2 homeless friends back on the streets after spending several weeks in a hotel.
The FT published a long article about the impact of the lockdown on homelessness. Various skywalkers spent quite a bit of time with Robert Wright who wrote the article. Definitely worth a read. It features an interview with one of our Victoria regulars Mig who has been on the streets for 7 months. Ella B arranged for Mig to have a shower and it clearly meant a lot to him as he mentions it in the interview. Thanks to Martin N for sharing a PDF version of the article.
Recently an old colleague and skywalker Lucia P did a podcast with me about Under One Sky and some of the lessons learned along the way. You can check it here.
